Franklin High Students place at Junior Classical
League State Competition
16 Students from Franklin High School, (Somerset
County, NJ) came home with 15 State Wide Awards from the Junior
Classical League. This is an organization that celebrates Greek and Roman
Civilization. Every year, at a different “host” high school, a state
convention is held where students compete in various activities. The
students also compete in a mini Olympics (chariot races, discus throw, running
races, etc). The students compete in an academic contest (mythology,
derivatives, grammar, Roman Life) and participate in fun activities like the
Latin Twister (Torquere), Latin Scavenger Hunt (Invenienda). They also
have art contests in various mediums, cooking contests (using ancient
Roman/Greek Recipes) and costume contests. The slogans and bookmarks that
they created had to promote the student of classics. Graffiti was
commonly used in ancient Rome to
advertise political agents and to express one’s love or cheer on a chariot
team, thus its validity as one of the contests. Each student won ribbons
for the categories.
