Sara
Polefka and Cassandra Barboe, 12th graders at Franklin High School
in Somerset, were awarded the highest award in Girl Scouting. Both girls received the Girl Scout Gold Award
this year. The requirements to earn this
award challenge high school age Girl Scouts to excel in many areas. They must give of their time and make a
commitment to the Girl Scout Promise and Law through their significant
accomplishments.
Both
girls belong to the Delaware-Raritan branch of the Girl Scouts and had to earn
four Interest Project Patches, which required about three months of their time
for each project. They had to
demonstrate their leadership ability and give at least 30 hours of time using
their leadership skills for others. They
also had to earn their Career Exploration and Senior Girl Scout Challenge
Pins. The Challenge has five sections,
each section having a different activity to achieve. The girls then had to use their skills of
planning, time management and carrying through, by doing a Girl Scout Gold
Award Project that must have a minimum of 50 hours of planning involved.
Cassandra
Barboe’s Gold Award Project was called “Write It, Sew It, Act
It”. This project found her planning,
organizing and presenting a two week Oak Spring Day Camp Program for 17
girls. Besides planning the traditional
boating and swimming camp program, the girls learned to use a sewing machine,
write scripts for plays and to act out one of the plays for the whole camp.
Sara
Polefka’s Gold Award Project was called “Balancing Act”. This project found her planning, organizing
and presenting a two week Oak Spring Day Camp Program for 10 girls. Besides planning the traditional boating and
swimming camp program, the girls learned about nutrition, stress, mental
wellness and outdoor cooking skills.
