Last
year, teacher Michael Ehrlich came up with an idea to help students learn by
practical application for his 8th grade math class. The idea was to have to students start a
business, learn what it takes to run it, and hopefully the students would show
some profit from their hard work.
Thanks to the Franklin Foundation for Educational Excellence, Mr.
Ehrlich had a chance to try out his idea.
In November 2003, Mr. Ehrlich was awarded a small grant from the
Foundation in the amount of $510.00.
During the 2003-2004 school year, his 8th grade math students
came up with the idea of building a lemonade stand and selling the juice in the
front lobby of the Middle School. Thanks
to the grant from the Foundation, the profits from the sale would be greater
than expected. During a week in May, his
students worked at the stand, sold and collected the money from their business
venture. The project was a great success
and the students were able to raise more than $400.00 in profit. This money is being donated to the Scott
Lysenko Fund to help fund awareness and research into Neurofibromatosis. This is the disease that caused the brain
tumor that took Scott’s life on February 20, 2004. Scott was a second grader at MacAfee Road School
in Franklin Township. The students were
pleased that the result of their project would help a worthy cause. Arrangements are being made to present the
money to a member of the Scott Lysenko Fund in the near future.
