A Welcome from the Principal

Mrs. Gloria A. Harzold

Let me first give a warm welcome to all our students and families as we begin the new school year in 2007-2008.  The Elizabeth Avenue School staff is excited and ready to embark on this educational journey together with you and your child.  A journey it is indeed as we strive to achieve excellence in educating children.  Our academic expectations are high and we are proud to announce that EAS has met the benchmarks for the NJASK 3 & 4, the statewide assessment given to every third and fourth grade student in New Jersey.  We will continue to provide quality instruction every day and we will continue to challenge children to problem solve, analyze data, consider innovative solutions, and work cooperatively.  We have also enhanced our programs in our continuous quest for excellence.

We are a multi-magnet school.  We offer many opportunities to our students in science, technology, and the fine, visual and performing arts.  Our Young Engineers Club, our Social Studies/Language Arts After-School Program, our orchestra, strings ensemble, drama and dance programs are available to students at the appropriate grade levels.  This year we will also offer a Current Events Club for our fourth grade students.  We provide Spanish as our World Language beginning in kindergarten.  All students  participate in our science lab as well as our computer lab.  Physical Education and Health are paramount to our students’ health and safety. Each student participates in two periods of physical education classes and one period of health instruction. We have a nurse on campus at all times who provides preventive strategies for maintaining good health habits through classroom lessons.  All students participate in our Environmental Curriculum and visit our Bunker Hill Environmental Center in Somerset as a class trip.  Additional class trips are also planned for visitation to sites that support our academic goals.

Our G & T Program begins in second grade; it is our philosophy that every classroom should receive the benefits of G & T instruction.  Therefore, all kindergarten and first grade students will also receive a G & T Challenge Lesson, once every 6-day cycle.

The EAS Parent-Teacher Association is a strong support to our curriculum and programs.  Parent volunteers participate on our NCLB-School Leadership Committee, assist our teachers, and support our programs.  We urge all families to become proactive in their children’s education and we welcome everyone into our educational community.  High academic expectations, quality teachers, ancillary programs, challenging lessons and strong parental involvement make EAS a great place for our children  to grow and learn.
