· Dear Families,
Welcome to third grade! We are looking forward to working together to make third grade a wonderful year! Below are some important items that you need to be aware of. Third grade is a big change from second grade. Students will be building upon the strong foundation of skills they learned last year in order to gain more independence this year. To help you prepare for what’s being expected of your child, as they will start the year, below is a brief introduction to some of the different units of study we will cover in the first and second marking periods.
-
● In MATH, your third grader will be exposed to addition and subtraction facts with regrouping, multiplication and division facts, place value using rounding and comparing/ordering numbers, area, introduction to fractions, and problem-solving.
-
● In WRITING, your child will use small moments to write a narrative. As you enjoy your summer, it would be helpful if your child journals the different experiences they have. They can also collect pictures, ticket stubs, postcards, and other items that may help them to recall specific places, trips, and moments they had. In September, we will add these to our Writer’s Notebooks and Writing folders.
-
● In READING, your child will focus on establishing the Reading Workshop model in the classroom. This involves listening to and discussing stories, selecting just-right books, and building a respectful reading community. Strategies include making connections, using context clues to understand new words, and inferring (using clues from the story) to identify character traits/qualities.
-
● In SOCIAL STUDIES, your child will be introduced to the elements of geography skills including continents and oceans, direction, citizenship, and map skills. A unit on Franklin Township will be a focus of the second marking period.
-
● In SCIENCE, your child’s classroom collaborates with the Science Lab activities. Students will learn about plants and animals, interactions between living and non-living things, life cycles, and food chains.
Homework reinforces skills taught in class. Although some days your child may need some help, for the most part, it should be completed independently and then checked over by an adult. Your child is required to read every night in their just-right book for 20 minutes. A reading calendar will be used to track this progress and is to be signed off on.
School supplies are such an important part of ensuring that your child is prepared and organized each day. Each classroom has specific needed materials that will be addressed by your child’s classroom teacher. Here are some of the basic required items that you can pick up before school starts to be used throughout the year, regardless of whom your child’s teacher will be.
-
