Philosophy of PBSIS

The philosophy of PBSIS (Positive Behavior Support in Schools) in New Jersey public schools is rooted in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a proactive and evidence-based framework designed to improve student behavior, promote a positive school climate, and enhance academic and social success.

Core Principles of PBSIS in NJ Schools:

  1. Prevention Over Punishment Focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors rather than relying on disciplinary actions.

  2. Data-Driven Decision Making Uses data to identify behavioral trends, evaluate interventions, and adjust strategies accordingly.

  3. Schoolwide Implementation Establishes clear expectations for behavior across all school settings, ensuring consistency.

  4. Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Provides different levels of support based on students' needs:

    • Tier 1: Universal strategies for all students.

    • Tier 2: Targeted interventions for at-risk students.

    • Tier 3: Intensive, individualized support.

  5. Equity and Inclusion Ensures that behavioral expectations and supports are fair, culturally responsive, and accessible to all students.

  6. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Integrates skills like self-regulation, conflict resolution, and relationship-building into daily practices.

  7. Collaboration with Families & Community Engages parents, guardians, and community members to reinforce positive behaviors beyond school.

Goals of PBSIS:

  • Improve student engagement and academic performance.

  • Reduce disruptive behavior and disciplinary referrals.

  • Foster a positive, inclusive school culture.

  • Support students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
